Winter 2023 Training Camps

Now that spring is officially here, it feels like a good moment to reflect on our winter training.

This year we put on two camps in Andalucia, Southern Spain. The January camp was aimed at “young gun racers” and they smashed out some impressive mileage and even more impressive sustained wattage over a huge week of cycling. It’s a good job that Coach Jake was there as my only contribution to each day’s ride was to wave them off in the morning and then help ensure they were sufficiently fed on their return each evening. They were simply too strong for me and I was happy to knock out some big days of zone 2 solo riding with the sun on my back in preparation for my ultra goals this summer.

In January we hosted the group in a villa with pool and hot tub where the guys enjoyed a post ride relax most days. The villa set up worked really well and proved a very cost effective option for our riders.

In February we were back in the same area, this time staying in a fabulous boutique hotel on the edge of the Tabernas desert. “Grand Masters” or Mamils, depending on how you view the world, were our customers on this occasion and so the upgrade in facilities was totally justified. These guys had different goals for the year, ranging from taking on L’Etape for the first time and tackling the monster that is Majorca 312. So the mountains of Andalucia provided the perfect training ground to build endurance and more importantly confidence. Over a full week the guys focused on riding steadily each day with ever increasing climbing elevation and a full ascent of the majestic Velifique at 1860m was the major achievement. Being able to get these “hors categorie” climbs in the legs in January/February whilst all the Alpine and Pyrenean mountains are deep in snow is such a privilege and yet another reason to ride down in Andalucia during winter.

So if you fancy a bit of sunshine and cycling next winter get in touch as we’d love to organise something especially for you.
